So I think I’m content. Content with all the widget-noodling and php script editing and css modifications and other nerdy-sounding phrases that make this whole changeover seem much tougher than it really is.
Welcome, friends, family, whoever, to the new daveakins.com. I hope you find it enjoyable. If not, there’s no one else to blame but myself.
Without putting you through insufferable aforementioned nerdy-sounding phrases, here are some of the things I’ve done ’round here:
- New, 3-column design/theme. The framework is based off the Qwilm! 3.0 Wordpress theme, but most of the visual changes were done by me.
- Widgets! One of the reasons all this is a lot easier to put together and maintain than it may seem is thanks to Wordpress widgets. Most, but not all, of the different sections in the sidebars are widgets. I just drag and drop them where I want them and tell them what to include via my Wordpress admin section (where I write all the posts and stuff). It’s even dorkier than it sounds.
- “Recent Tweets” are imported from my Twitter account. Twitter’s really supposed to be used to tell your friends every single thing that’s going on at every moment of your life, either via the website or by text or instant messages. It’ll be used for that, but also for links and little snippets of stuff not deserving of a full blog post.
- “Recent Posts” and “Recent Comments” - pretty self-explanatory, but new so I thought I’d mention it.
- Comments are now supposed to allow you to upload a personal image, or “gravatar” that displays next to your text whenever you comment. I haven’t gotten that working yet and might not worry about it.
- A bulldog at the post footers!
Um, I think that’s pretty much it: blog, widgets, something-something, yadda yadda. Oh, if you run into any issues or something doesn’t look right, please let me know. And comment. Thanks!
