Oof.

Ticket Of The Day: Men’s NCAA Basketball Regional at the Georgia Dome, 2006

Men's NCAA Basketball Regional at the Georgia Dome, 2006

This is the only NCAA tournament event I’ve ever been to (I think that was the case for Josh as well, who went with me) and it didn’t disappoint.

In the first game, LSU upset top-seeded Duke and would go on to the Final Four. In the second, Texas knocked off West Virginia on a buzzer-beating jumper by Kenton Paulino:

Get yer Knowledge-Gettin’ On…

  • The reality is that housing is not an investment. It’s shelter. That is all housing has ever been. Self-serving organizations like the National Association of Realtors like to tell people that buying a home is a good way to build long-term wealth, but this statement couldn’t be further from the truth. (Rent Vs. Buy Myths That Ruined the Housing Market - via Kottke.org)

As a renter, it’s nice to hear this considering we’re all continuously led to believe that home ownership is a primary determinant in whether you’re a first-class citizen or not. (Full disclosure - the money I’m saving by renting isn’t exactly going towards true investments, so I’m hardly perfect.)

  • Basically, the small plastic ball is called a widget. The purpose of the widget is to release CO2 from some of the beer in the can to create the head. It is meant to mimic the texture and head of Guinness on tap.

I kinda thought everyone knew this. But the scientific explanation is pretty cool, if you’re into that kind of thing.

  • Dr. Congressman Ron Paul’s supporters took “grass roots politics” to its ultimate, ridiculous extreme. They brought fun to politics — even if they didn’t see the humor — and the nation’s “Mainstream Media” will always be thankful for the Paul fanatics.

Dismiss the fanatics (of which every candidate has) at your leisure, but dismiss the message at your peril. Make sure to read the comments from “June Melton” (4:55, March 8th) and “punkpunkbaby” (6:44, March 9th).

  • Here’s one for all my buddies who use iTunes: Download Music from Your Friends’ iTunes Libraries Over the Internet with Mojo.
  • Now we’re getting into personal territory when it comes to the dollar’s falling value (here’s a hint, guys: STOP BORROWING FROM THE FED AND STOP PRINTING MORE MONEY): This better not screw up my next visit to Amsterdam, because I’m going back to Amsterdam. They have beautiful canals.

I leave you with The Long Johns and a perfect, hilarious explanation of the subprime mortgage crisis…

Ew. This Tastes Like Crad.

Yum.

94%DRUNKARD

Frankly, I’m a bit offended that an extensive knowledge of the makeup of alcoholic beverages automatically makes me a drunkard when in fact it’s my case of Miller Lite every day after work that makes me one.

46%

Disappointed in this one - I thought I had this one pretty well figured out.

20

Thinking about putting this one on my resume’.

55

Tougher than it seems - I’m curious to see if my hypothesis is true; most, if not all, people would name more countries in the time allotted if they didn’t know they were being timed.

64%

I’m making it a point to lose weight, so unfortunately this one will go down as we move through the spring and summer.

32

Got hung up on this one several times where I’d draw a complete blank. Spent 30 seconds arguing with my screen for not accepting “vermillion”. Little did I know that I was spelling it wrong (FWIW, only one “L” in “vermilion” - who knew).

42%

I’ve seen enough movies. I’d be fine.

56% Geek

Not sure if I should be proud or disappointed. OK I admit it - I’m disappointed.

Ditto.

Still Proud.

I’m still proud of our Dawgs. It was difficult to see them jump out to such an early lead and hold it through halftime, because if there’s been one ongoing negative about this team (even through the SEC tournament), it’s the fact they always hit a lull, get tired, miss shots, give up buckets on the other end at minutes at a time. And that’s what the last 8-9 minutes of the loss to Xavier was - a king-sized lull, slump, whatever you want to call it. That’s why it was difficult to watch us build such a lead going into the half - I still knew it was coming. If we hit that wall in the first half, we might still be in the tourney.

Hopefully this last week will resonate through the program for a long time to come. Yata and Bliss laid a foundation formed more of poured heart than poured concrete. Now we see if the others can adopt what our two seniors have left this team with. We now have a solid group of tournament-tested underclassmen to challenge for the SEC title next year.

I’d like to say “I can’t wait”, but that wouldn’t be true; after all, we got a football season to play. But this run still makes it hard to be patient.
